Raleigh Charter High School challenges college-bound students in a creative and supportive environment to become knowledgeable, thoughtful, contributing citizens.
RCHS is a free, independent public school chartered by the State Board of Education of North Carolina. At RCHS we believe that a college-preparatory education requires several key elements:
Highly motivated students and actively involved parents
Well-educated faculty who are kind, caring, strong teachers
An advanced curriculum that allows placement of students in the course-level that is appropriate for their learning needs

2009-2010 Phoenix Fund
Fundraising

56% Family Participation
Thank you to the many families who have already supported the Phoenix Fund. The response has been strong. We are still pushing toward the 100% participation goal. This means that $5.00 counts as much as $50 and $500. If you are able, please consider a gift that is a stretch.
Remember
  • Check to see if your employer has a matching gift program.
  • There is not an expected gift amount.
  • Spreading a donation out to monthly or quarterly payments may enable a family to consider a larger total contribution.
To donate, attach your check to a completed donation form and deliver these two items to the school office using a student courier or the US Mail. Everything you need to know is on the form. http://www.raleighcharterhs.org/giving/donationcard.pdf. You may donate online by going to the “Giving” tab of the RCHS website.
It is not too late to help meet our 100% participation goal. All gifts will be greatly appreciated.

SOOTS' Fat Tuesday Event Raises Over $2,000 – Thanks RCHS
SOOTS - Sustaining Roots Music Community Project
The 5th Annual Fat Tuesday Film and Music Festival was a great success thanks to the generosity of the greater RCHS community. The Mardi Gras event, sponsored by the Sustaining Roots Music Community Project, served homemade gumbos and desserts to over seventy-five guests before Tarboro bluesmen & Music Maker artists Lightnin' Wells & George Higgs charmed the crowd with their traditional Southern blues.
Also of note is this photo, taken during the event by SOOTS' documentary filmmaker Josh Steadman, which was selected by WUNC's "State of Things" as this week's "picture of the week." For more SOOTS photos – visit our archives via www.sootsblues.org

Bill Ferris - Give My Poor Heart Ease: Voices of the Mississippi Blues
SOOTS - Sustaining Roots Music Community Project
Recently, a few SOOTS students were given the opportunity to meet UNC professor and acclaimed folklorist Bill Ferris at a lecture about his new book, Give My Poor Heart Ease: Voices of the Mississippi Blues. sponsored by the Harvard Club of RTP. Mr. Ferris has devoted much of his life to the understanding and documenting the Southern Blues Culture that SOOTS works hard to preserve and share. You can learn more about Bill Ferris and his book at http://www.uncpress.unc.edu/poorheartease/. SOOTS hopes to bring Prof. Ferris to RCHS next year.
SOOTS also hopes you'll consider its patronage packages for our 4th Annual Bluesfest featuring John Dee Holeman and Boo Hanks on Friday, April 23th at the Historic LongView Center on Moore Square. As always, all proceeds after cost go directly to the Music Maker Relief Foundation.

Quiz Bowl Team wins State Competition
Clubs
On Saturday, March 15, the North Carolina Open Academic State Tournament (NCOAST) was held in Greensboro. We took four teams to the tournament, and three of them made the playoffs. Our C team bowed out in the first round; the B team made the quarterfinals but lost a very close match to the eventual third place finisher. Our A team defeated NCSSM 435-135 after spotting them a 95-point lead (the A team only allowed them 45 more points over the remaining 17 questions in the match). The teams:

A: P. Schultz, G. Sanka, M. Lochbaum, E. Doyle, R. Self
B: B. Gamble, D. Qu, B. Besser, P. Breen, R. Rajeev, D. Hash
C: C. Allison, P. Sanka, J. Trinks, C. McGowan, J. Kariisa
D: A. Iyer, B. Izatt, D. Friedenberg, Z. Butler, N. Crain

P. Schultz was the top individual scorer for the tournament, as well as in NC for the season.

This state championship was our eighth consecutive. We are the only school in the state to have won this quiz-bowl state championship, in the history of these state championship tournaments.

We will be taking two teams to the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament in Chicago over Memorial Day weekend. We congratulate these players in their efforts and their accomplishments.

We the People State Champions
History
RCHS is North Carolina We the People State Champions.

On Friday, March 5 Raleigh Charter High School students competed and showcased their work at the North Carolina State We the People Competition here in Raleigh.

Students engaged in a simulated Congressional Hearing, testifying in front of lawyers and judges as experts on aspects of the United States Constitution and the principles of American government. Students answered prepared questions like, "How would you define deliberation and do you agree or disagree that deliberation should be at the core of lawmaking? Why?" and "Why does the establishment clause generate the fiercest arguments about religion-related constitutional rights, even though there have been no established state churches in America for over two centuries?" They also answered follow-up questions that they had not heard before.

Ms. Klein's Constitutional Issues class won first place in the competition, earning the right to represent North Carolina at the National Competition in Washington, D.C. from April 23-27. This is a class competition and all students contributed to the victory, demonstrating a deep understanding of American constitutionalism and the meaning of American citizenship. Please congratulate:
R. Afzal, R. Austin, S. Chapin, K. Grayson, J. Hoover, A. Karsten, M. Khater, A. Le, T. Moore, G. North, S. O'Shea, I. Ogelsby, E. Rock, J. Rowan, and J. Tobia.

Some of Mr. Day's students also showcased their work at the competition. They had a great day answering questions and receiving feedback from the judges.

Go to the NC Bar Association website for more details about the competition and to see videos of RCHS being awarded this honor.

Best High Schools
On December 10, 2009, U.S.News & World Report ranked Raleigh Charter High School 24th among its America’s Best High Schools. The ranking is based on a sophisticated calculation of several factors, including state-mandated testing and AP participation and achievement in 2007-2008. Last year, Raleigh Charter High School had a ranking of 20th in US News. These rankings qualify for what US News calls the Gold Medal List, the Top 100 Schools.
Such rankings are informative and affirming, and they let colleges know the level of work that is going on at our school year in and year out.
Congratulations to our teachers and our students for their noteworthy achievements!
You may visit the magazine’s web site for more information, particularly about methodology and your old school: http://www.usnews.com/sections/education/high-schools.
Also, see this article in Raleigh's News & Observer about the U.S.News & World Report ranking.

RCHS in the WRAL News
News
On Thursday, October 29, WRAL aired a short story about Raleigh Charter High School as part of their Project Education series.
Renee Chou wanted to investigate why RCHS was ranked in national magazines. For your information, US News and World Report publishes high-school rankings each December and Newsweek publishes rankings each May.
These annual rankings are nice, and they tell one little part of our story. We feel that the high-school experience, however, is much more complex than these rankings represent. To view the whole story, click on the following link: http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/6304828/

Sustaining the soul of Southern song with SOOTS
RCHS Flame
RCHS Flame Sweet tea, barbeque, hot days and "greasy greens" are all specialties of the South. While the savory flavors and humid haze won't go away, the music that is so influential and unique to the South could. While there are traces of this music in almost every genre of music out today, the purest form of blues is aging, slipping through the cracks of time. ...
